Microsoft PowerPoint - Problem with projector

Question
I have Office 97. Created a powerpoint presentation and when I hook up to a projector the projector tells me that the computer is not there. I have tried different projectors and same problem. We are using usb cabling between computer and projector. The computer is a Gateway Laptop.

I have no experience of using USB connections to projectors. I have always used a video cable connection. With it is often necessary to hold down the fn key and press a function key to get the correct display sent to both laptop and video.
The key location varies but usually has a two screens symbol. It's f5 on my laptop.
